In the second track, “Bittersweet,” the meaning of silence is connected to the Portuguese word saudade, a concept not easily translated into English, although the word “nostalgia” is often put forth as a rough approximation. Saudade involves a mixture of feelings – from melancholy to joy – about missing something, someone, or even a past situation.
To portray these mixed emotions, the intended character of the music is ambiguous or enigmatic. The musical devices applied to convey this character include the use of mutes on the strings, passages where the string quartet performs without the rhythm section, and a major-minor ambiguity through the use of major chords with an added raised ninth, which is the enharmonic equivalent of a minor third. The instrumentation is the guitar trio with upright bass and drums, plus a standard string quartet. There is no dedicated section for solo improvisation in this track.
lyrics
The theme of silence and its many poetic meanings unifies this project. Each movement reflects a different implication of the word “silence.” There is a poem written for each one of these meanings, attaching words to each composition in this collection, to enhance the meaning and communication of the instrumental material. It is important to observe that these concepts of silence are not literal. They are mostly personal and philosophical.
Poem by Marco Antonio Santos
English translation by Francisco Vilhena
Dark box full of faces
Graffiti, walls, sun burials
Large nocturnal diaphragms
Negatives of the memories on paper
Your hand, in the air
Your colour, in the air
Your smell, in the air
Propagates, deceives, affection
The shutter clicks
Synaesthetic light
ISO control
Of dance, of direction, of first and last times (no goodbyes)
Your carnaval, in the air
Your street party with beers on the square, in the air
My negatives
Your rejections, pixelated flesh
from what is forgotten to struggling to forget
from what is remembered to struggling to, stop –
in the air

Wow! What a voice! What a beautiful record. Just get it. Everybody need this once in a while. Gives the heart hope & solace. And I don't even know what she is singing about. Essential. Robert Bloemkolk
Stark music from the string trio of Mazz Swift, Tomeka Reid and Silvia Bolognesi; beautiful, swirling songs with flashes of dissonance. Bandcamp New & Notable May 1, 2017
Had been wanting to purchase something from Hollenbeck for years. Definitely one of my favorites for 2023. Have already listened to it 5 times in the last month. Nina's Dad 2022
