about

“Eyes of Us Both: Part 1,” was written for the string quartet and the recurrent jazz trio formation. This movement portrays feeling comfortable with someone in complete silence, moreover, how you learn about yourself through someone else's perspective. The image of the reflection of your own eyes on someone else's eyes was the visual concept for this movement. To transmit this idea, there is an absence of a clear melodic theme, intensive application of extended techniques by the strings, use of a guitar drone (an electronic feature that sustains the notes using an infinite feedback delay), guitar voicings using mostly the same physical shape and the presence of conducted and rubato parts. The character of this composition is “airy” and delicate.
There is an open collective solo section for drums, bass and guitar, with cued-inserted parts written for the strings interacting with them.

lyrics

The theme of silence and its many poetic meanings unifies this project. Each movement reflects a different implication of the word “silence.” There is a poem written for each one of these meanings, attaching words to each composition in this collection, to enhance the meaning and communication of the instrumental material. It is important to observe that these concepts of silence are not literal. They are mostly personal and philosophical.

Undress me in silence
Infinite ocean made of glass
Open me, contort me, unfold me

Reflection

Silence that is seen
That silences and contradicts
I see that shadow through slanted glass

When I see you – I
If sound, review
Your pair reflects, cools down, speaks, but doesn’t feel
Your closed door reflects and recuses – your sound softens – your text cuts like glass

On the glass screen – divergent lenses
At last, our eyes
Two turn into four – Your text cuts like glass
