about

Closing the album, “March of the Loud Quietude” was composed for jazz trio and woodwind quartet. There are no doubles in the woodwind section for this movement. The state of depression or feeling depressed is the notion of silence related to this track, which can also be divided into two main parts. Depressed individuals tend to hide their depression to others and suffer in silence, sometimes even pretending that nothing is wrong. The extra-musical feel intended for “March” is the sense of conflict, although under a tranquil appearance. A few musical features were chosen to convey this character. There are a few time signature conflicts on every part of this track and the use of contrasting dynamics to generate movement within a mostly static melody line, where the woodwinds are used more vertically, instead of having moving melody lines. The guitar requires an alternative tuning configuration with the first string moved to one half-step below the standard tuning. The bass and the drums, similar to the previous track, also present a repetitive groove for the first part -- a stylized march rhythm. The second part has a 3/4 meter, contrasting with the 4/4 first part, and contains the only dedicated solo passage in “March.” This track finishes with a drum solo, accompanied by the rest of the group.

lyrics

The theme of silence and its many poetic meanings unifies this project. Each movement reflects a different implication of the word “silence.” There is a poem written for each one of these meanings, attaching words to each composition in this collection, to enhance the meaning and communication of the instrumental material. It is important to observe that these concepts of silence are not literal. They are mostly personal and philosophical.

Poem by Marco Antonio Santos
English translation by Francisco Vilhena

Billboards everywhere
Faces and voices, oil smell
Street artists in a solo concert – hue and lights

Small agressions in the dispute of a frivolous life
Faces and voices, smell of benzene
Monuments of blood-stained horses and the pigeons – hue and chaos

Your thighs
Smiles in strange bodies
Parade, they dance, taken by sweat and madness
Your teeth
Amassing the bodies in strange chairs
Bite, they break, become voice and madness

I no longer watch the credits
The white text against that all-confounding darkness
Colorless film, without focus, without script
If my thighs or your thighs – directionless
If my teeth on your thighs – carve the flesh – meaningless step
Pieces of meat the colour of blood or bush or sea

I don’t understand the urban lights in the black and white negative
When to follow, when to stop
Whom to give right of way

I cross the street of your house
In a battle of internal castles
Antagonists of a secondary character
Fooling you all morning
I step on the crosswalk, on the chin, the margin
Where to – North, South, why

Grey hues – without chaos, devoid of light – no daydreams
