about

In “Numb,” the meaning of silence evoked that of “introspection.” While this album can be considered introspective for the most part, this movement reflects the process of self-analysis that went into creating this work. Writing about silence demanded a great of introspection and some isolation; therefore, this track, as well as its related poem, considers the composition process of About: Silence.
This track was written for the string quartet and the jazz trio with no assigned solo section. The movement was planned to sound “static” and there are some important features that convey this idea. The drums have a consistent and repetitive line, which contrasts with most of this project -- full of freedom and openness for the rhythm section. Also, there is a rhythmic inversion of the drum “groove.” At points a bar of 2/4 is inserted within the 4/4 orientation, causing the phrase to flip its second half to its first half. Another trait of the drums in this movement is the use of post-recording electronics, making it different than the acoustic sound.

lyrics

The theme of silence and its many poetic meanings unifies this project. Each movement reflects a different implication of the word “silence.” There is a poem written for each one of these meanings, attaching words to each composition in this collection, to enhance the meaning and communication of the instrumental material. It is important to observe that these concepts of silence are not literal. They are mostly personal and philosophical.

Poem by Marco Antonio Santos
English translation by Francisco Vilhena

It was time so I went to pick up some dew
Wooden cabin, wooden people, wooden bed and all the air that could fit in my lungs
Practicing distance from the world. From the virus. From the other’s time

I’ve dug my feet on the ground
Smell the morning as the light ceases sleep, not sound
There is a taste in the cold air of the morning

The mother tongue melds with this wooden cabin, these wooden people, this wooden bed – this cedar sound

I don’t know if it’s running – vanishing point
If it recognizes me – meeting point
There is a taste of fugue in this woodwind quartet
